How Unified Management Is Organized

Accounts, organizations, tenants, products, and how CSE fits into them

Overview

SonicWall Unified Management is the successor to MySonicWall. Before registering or licensing Cloud Secure Edge (CSE), it is worth understanding the four entities the portal is built around, because the licensing workflows refer to all of them.

Accounts and organizations

Signing up for Unified Management creates two things at once:

  • An account, which is the identity you sign in with.
  • An organization, which is created behind that account to hold it.

Additional users can then be invited into that organization, and an account can also join an existing organization instead of creating a new one.

Organization types

An organization is one of two types, and the type determines which functionality is available:

  • An end-user organization is a customer.
  • A partner organization belongs to an organization in the SonicWall partner program. Partner organizations have access to additional functionality, including Renewal Manager and the monthly billing program.

Partner status is applied when an organization is onboarded to the partner program. It is not a self-service setting. Contact SonicWall to confirm or change the status of your organization.

Tenants

A tenant represents a customer. Inside a tenant sits a grouping of the products registered for that customer.

Important: CSE has a one-to-one relationship with a tenant. A tenant can hold only one CSE product. Attempting to register a second CSE product into a tenant that already has one fails, with a message directing you to use a different tenant. If a customer genuinely requires more than one CSE instance, that requires more than one tenant.

Products and serial numbers

Every product registered in Unified Management receives a unique serial number. The serial number is the identifier SonicWall uses for that registered product, in the same way an organization name uniquely identifies an organization. Licensing actions such as renewing, upgrading, or activating an additional service are performed against the serial number.

Note the distinction between two views of the same product, because they count differently:

  • The product view shows one line per registered product, so a CSE product appears once.
  • The Monthly Subscription view shows the subscriptions being billed, so a product carrying both Secure Private Access (SPA) and Secure Internet Access (SIA) appears as two lines.

The scope selector

Unified Management presents a scope selector throughout the console. Changing scope switches which organization or tenant the current view applies to. After registering a product into a new tenant, you may need to change scope to that tenant before its inventory appears.

What changed from MySonicWall

The back-office workflows are substantially the same in both portals: provisioning tenants, registering products, viewing licensing, managing role-based access control, provisioning monthly billing, viewing license and subscription history, opening support tickets, and downloading firmware.

Three things are different in Unified Management:

  1. The administration consoles of the cloud products are being brought into the same console, rather than requiring a separate visit to Capture Security Center.
  2. The scope selector is present throughout.
  3. Alerting across product lines is new, including a map view.

Cross-launch and sub-app

Two terms describe how a product’s console is reached from Unified Management:

  • A sub app is rendered inside the Unified Management console itself. Network Security Manager and Wireless Network Manager work this way.
  • A cross-launch opens the product console in a new browser tab and completes a single sign-on (SSO) flow.

CSE is currently a cross-launch. Selecting CSE from the product inventory opens the CSE Command Center in a new tab. Moving CSE to a sub app is planned but not yet in place.

Note: Access to the CSE console depends on the user group permissions configured in Unified Management. A user who has not been granted CSE access in a user group cannot open the console, regardless of product state. See Unified Management.
