CSE Licensing and Activation Keys
What an activation key represents, and how one is obtained

Overview
Most CSE licensing workflows in Unified Management begin with an activation key. This page explains what a key represents and the routes by which one is obtained, which is the part most often misunderstood.
What an activation key represents
An activation key represents a SKU, or stock keeping unit, which is the part number identifying exactly what was purchased. A CSE SKU specifies four things:
- The product, for example CSE.
- The service within that product, for example SPA Basic or SIA Advanced.
- The term of the license, for example one year.
- The quantity of users the license covers.
Because SonicWall generates the key, the portal already knows all four values when the key is entered. This is why pasting a key into the registration field immediately identifies it as a CSE key, and why the confirmation dialog can tell you the resulting user count and expiration date before you commit.
How a key is obtained
There are two routes, and they behave differently.
Through a distributor, in the standard channel
SonicWall licenses reach a customer through a distributor and then a partner. SonicWall distributors hold CSE licenses in their own ordering portals, and operate in each country where SonicWall sells.
The sequence is:
- A partner orders in the distributor’s portal, identifying the purchase by SKU ID, and receives a quote.
- The distributor sends SonicWall the resulting purchase order through a system integration, along with the email address of the purchaser.
- Unified Management generates an activation key and emails it to that purchaser.
SKUs are ordered by SonicWall partners. A partner obtains the activation key, generally on behalf of the customer, and the key is emailed to the person named on the order. If you are a customer rather than a partner, your SonicWall partner or SonicWall sales can arrange the order.
Through Buy Now, in the console
Buy Now is a self-service purchase inside Unified Management. It presents a catalog, a term of one, two, or three years, a price per user, and a user quantity, then checkout by credit card or electronic check. Under the hood it buys an activation key and applies it.
Where Buy Now is started from determines what the purchase attaches to:
- Started from a product, the purchase applies to that product’s serial number directly.
- Started from the catalog, by searching the part number, the purchase is tied to your user and the key is emailed to you.
Note: CSE may not appear when browsing the catalog by product. Searching by part number locates the SKU.
Which route to use
Buy Now requires no distributor involvement, which suits a small purchase or an immediate conversion to a paid license. Ordering through a partner supports quoting and partner pricing, and is the route to use for a larger purchase or a negotiated term.
If a customer needs to increase their licensing and does not hold a key, SonicWall sales can take them through the order process that produces one.
